AGRICOLA

"AGRICOLA (last reviewed, CH, Apr'99, 36-4236) is the comprehensive index to agricultural literature produced by the USDA's National Agricultural Library (NAL). It is accessible through an Endeavor "Web Voyage" gateway or via Z39.50. AGRICOLA consists of the Article Citation Database and NAL Catalog. Records in both data sets are updated daily. The NAL Catalog includes records for monographs, serials, technical reports, audiovisual items, and many foreign and domestic dissertations held by NAL and cooperating libraries." -- Choice

AGRIS/CARIS Information Centre

“This UN FAO-based Web site was developed in 1974 and treats all aspects of agriculture. There are 199 national organizations that contribute to this site, and they add approximately 14,000 items per month. The biological reference list is approximately three million entries. The site offers many databases online, is multilingual, and contains an agricultural thesaurus. This is an excellent information source and, in spite of its size, is very easy to navigate.” – Choice

ATTRA: National sustainable agriculture information

"This easy-to-navigate Web site on sustainable agriculture, created and managed by the nonprofit National Center for Appropriate Technology, is funded by a USDA grant. Users may locate material through a search box or browse several hundred documents in the sections included under Publications & Resources: What Is Sustainable Agriculture?, Horticultural Crops, Field Crops, Soils & Compost, Water Management, Pest Management, Organic Farming, Livestock, Marketing, Business & Risk Management, Energy & Agriculture, Education, Other Resources, and Master Publication List. Most of these sections contain adequate text and also references to other nonprofit, governmental, and commercial Web sites that can supply additional information." -- Choice

American Society of Agronomy.

"The ASA Web page contains information on careers, publications, meetings, government policy, and more." -- Choice

Botanicus

"Perhaps more so than many sciences, botany requires frequent reference to older literature. Much of this literature is held only in specialized libraries and rare book collections. The Missouri Botanical Garden has responded to this need by creating Botanicus, an electronic library of botanical literature, primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries." -- Choice

eFloras.org

“This virtual library of online floras offers resources from leading international institutions of botanical research, including the monumental Flora of China and the Flora of North America, which are also published in print. All the floras at this site, which is managed and hosted by the Missouri Botanical Garden, are accessible through a uniform interface, and can be searched by plant family, genera, and print volume number. Within the Primary Floras section, an advanced search feature allows for searching by Latin and common name, elevation, and specific region. The plant descriptions in the floras are primarily text-based, with limited links to illustrations.” – Choice

eNature: Field Guides.

eNature: Field Guides is a useful, credible resource for basic information about the plants and animals of the US. Its content comes from the same data used to produce the printed Audubon field guides. This online guide covers over 5,500 wildflower, tree, invertebrate, and vertebrate species.” – Choice

Feeding America.

"The Michigan State University Library is known for its collection of more than 7,000 historical cookbooks. Now, with Feeding America, the library makes part of its collection highly accessible in a digitized, searchable format. The collection features 76 of "the most influential and important American cookbooks from the late 18th to early 20th century," and presents their high-quality digital pages in JPEG or PDF format and also in searchable full-text transcription in HTML or XML, with the ability to click back and forth between image and full text." -- Choice

Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations

"Like most of its siblings in the UN system, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) site contains an impressive range of content. Typically a three-column structure is maintained whether one navigates laterally or vertically. However, major FAO groups such as Forestry, Fisheries, or Economics and Statistics vary widely in formatting and categorization, which, given the site's scope, can lead one astray." -- Choice

Food Science Central

"Food Science Central is an information-packed site from International Food Information Service (IFIS), which also produces Food Science & Technology Abstracts (FSTA). The site offers both free and subscription-based information related to food science, food technology, and human nutrition." -- Choice

Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation.

“This well-designed Web site contains much specific botanical information and many images in its eight databases, various collections, and publications. Images display clearly, load rapidly, and present an attractive appearance.” -- Choice

National Agricultural Library Digital Repository (NALDR)

“The NALDR made its appearance in April 2006. It provides access primarily to older issues of important, heavily used NAL serial publications, such as the Agricultural Economic Report and Agriculture Handbook. Online access to 40 nonserial books is also available. Currently, over 170,000 pages are stored, and the content will continue to grow, though the site provides no information on the selection or priority of future additions. This easy-to-use site provides basic and advanced searching, including Boolean operators, truncation, and phrase and proximity searching. Search tutorials and help pages are well designed and sufficient. Browsing by title is limited to a few series, though the search can be used to generate tables of contents.” – Choice

Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) soils

"Created by the USDA, the NRCS Soils Web site is an excellent blending of scientific information from federal and state agencies, the academic world, and professional organizations. A sprawling database, it offers subject access to information through many routes, including broad subject headings, quick access points, and current soils news. For direct access, a search engine and a site map are also included. Information is also arranged for specific types of users: geographers, soil scientists, land use managers, teachers and students, and city and county planners." -- Choice

Society of American Foresters.

"The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the nonprofit organization representing over 15,600 professional foresters in the US. Founded in 1900, SAF's mission is "to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of professional forestry." Full-time professional foresters oversee the Web site's content, contributing considerable authority, expertise, and quality." -- Choice

Soil Science Society of America.

"The Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), the American Society of Agronomy (ASA), and the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) are all autonomous but "share a close working relationship." Thus the SSSA Web site cross-links to those of the other two societies. It includes links to various society functions, including publications, and information on careers, meetings, and member services." -- Choice

TreeLink: The Urban Forestry Portal.

“The TreeLink portal offers an extensive collection of links to journals and extension publications, scholarly Web sites, discussion boards, and research centers related to urban forestry.” – Choice

USDA Home and Garden Bulletin Archive.

"This site contains 267 issues of the Home and Garden Bulletin published by the US Department of Agriculture. Given their predigital dates (1952-2003), these are scanned documents formatted as PDF files. Although the offerings are extensive, the site's creators are still searching for missing bulletins, which will be added on an ongoing basis." -- Choice

USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center.

"The USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center (FRESC) was formally established in October 1994 with the merger of several existing research groups, including the Oregon State University Cooperative Park Studies Unit, the Pacific Forest and Basin Rangeland Systems Cooperative Research and Technology Unit, the Raptor Research and Technical Assistance Center, and several field stations within the National Park Service. FRESC was eventually incorporated into the US Geological Survey." -- Choice

The Virtual Library of Botany/Plant Biology (Biosciences)

“A broad directory of botany resources, this site offers links to plant taxonomy, genetics, natural history, and related sites. A personal project developed by botany and microbiology professor Russell (Univ. of Oklahoma), this directory is essentially a notebook of useful online resources supporting botany teaching and learning at the undergraduate and graduate levels.” – Choice
