| American Mathematical Society |
It is not at all surprising that the American Mathematical Society's Web site is crisp, clean, and well organized. Internal links work quickly and accurately, directing visitors to a variety of AMS-specific features (e.g., membership information, prizes and awards, and conferences) with hyperlinks virtually impossible to misinterpret. Navigational clarity has been well achieved by the Web master. Moreover, multiple links are readily evident for some of the more popular pages; from the home page one can immediately travel to the AMS bookstore though one of the picture icons on the left, the "books" link under the Publications & Tools heading, and the AMS Bookstore link at the top of the page. Additional column headings exist for Areas of Interest, News, and Calendar, with sensibly arranged links appropriately organized beneath the appropriate heading. The bane of all Web masters tends to be external links, which can die in an instant, beyond their control. The Math on the Web link, for example, takes one to a page of 34 internal hyperlinks that provide access to an extensive number--probably thousands--of other sites. Choice |
| Calculus on the Web. |
Calculus on the Web provides a huge assortment of guided practice problems, created and partially funded through a Temple University National Science Foundation Grant. The authors succeeded in creating a format that is clearly organized and amazingly thorough. The site includes the precalculus/calculus sequence content as well as linear algebra, number theory, and abstract algebra. Choice |
| Convergence: Where Mathematics, History and Teaching Interact |
"This free online magazine, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America with the cooperation of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, contains resources for teaching mathematics by using its history as a pedagogical tool." -- Choice |
| Eric Weisstein's world of mathematics. |
"Eric Weisstein's World of Mathematics (MathWorld) is the culmination of more than a decade of work by its namesake. Weisstein began collecting data while still in high school and continued his efforts through the completion of graduate work in planetary astronomy. Weisstein is now Technical Internet Encyclopedia Developer for MathWorld's sponsor, Wolfram Research Inc. Originally distributed in print as the CRC Concise Encyclopedia of Mathematics (CH, Jun'99), MathWorld is a comprehensive mathematics information bank." -- Choice |
| Interactivate. |
"The Shodor Education Foundation provides a fine collection of constructivist middle-school and upper-elementary activities, complete with teaching strategies, worksheets, and online applets. Each lesson includes an abstract and objectives, tie-ins with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards, and clearly presented instructions for teachers' advance preparation. Importantly, even student worksheets are provided." -- Choice |
| Math DL |
"Not surprisingly, the Mathematical Association of America's Digital Library (DL)Web site serves as an outstanding resource for both instructors and students of mathematics. The high quality, easily navigable site is organized into four primary sections, and future growth is anticipated." -- Choice |
| The Math Forum @ Drexel |
Math Forum achieves its ambitious mission of enriching and supporting mathematics teaching and learning by offering high-quality accessible online information, as well as support for teachers through online communities. Discussion groups are hosted, and activities such as Teacher2Teacher, a peer-mentored question-and-answer service for teachers and parents, all contribute to a supportive teaching environment. | Number Theory Web. |
Confirming a previous review (CH, Feb'01, 38-3380), this site remains an international resource for active researchers in number theory. Though providing access to quality information about number theory topics, the site's goal is to be a communications center to both individuals and Web sites that focus on number theory. Choice |
| PlanetMath.org |
"PlanetMath, a virtual community tagged as "math, for the people, by the people," was originally developed to replace MathWorld http://mathworld.wolfram.com/ (CH, Apr'05, 42-4694) when it was briefly unavailable. Created in 2000 by Egge and Krowne, this free online mathematics encyclopedia/repository is hosted by the Virginia Tech Digital Library Research Lab. The content is created collaboratively by members who write and review entries. Egge and Krowne describe PlanetMath as "a unique kind of hybrid of MathWorld, Wikipedia, and Slashdot concepts."" -- Choice |
| The Prime Pages. |
This Web site is totally devoted to the understanding of prime numbers (a number is "prime" if it is divisible only by itself and 1). The study of prime numbers goes back at least to Euclid and this study has been a key component of number theory ever since. There are many significant historical unsolved problems related to prime numbers, and primes are a major component of modern encryption approaches. Choice |
| QuickMath |
"QuickMath is an automated Web site that allows students to quickly check their answers to basic problems. Areas include expanding, factoring, and simplifying expressions; solving equations; solving inequalities; differentiation and integration in calculus; arithmetic operations with matrices; and graphing equations and inequalities." -- Choice |
| VassarStats: statistical computation Web site |
VassarStats is well put together and user friendly, and covers all basic topics in an introductory statistics course and much more. It can be used in all biological and social sciences statistics courses. It has all necessary tables for determining probabilities for important distributions. Single-variable analysis is presented as well as two-variable analysis. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) are well presented. All important tests and procedures, as well as single and multiple regression and correlation analysis, are easy to understand and use. Data may be retrieved from spreadsheets and analysis can be performed at the touch of a key. Many statistical tests are presented, among which one finds even the chi-square goodness-of-fit test and comparison tests. Even simple logistic regression is nicely presented with graphs and comparisons. -- Choice |
